Early Risers

Soldiers of Fortune

What the hell is Soldiers of Fortune? I would say that most of us in the band don’t really know. We have our ideas. . .for me it’s continuously soloing all the time. I tell people it’s a punk version of the Allman Brothers. Whether it’s even remotely like that I can’t say.

We wanted to make a band that was the antithesis of a band. We didn’t want to rehearse. We didn’t want to load gear. We didn’t want to do any bullshit promotion.

There was a moment when a couple labels really wanted to sign us – which struck us as hilarious b/c we cared so little about the game – which should tell you something about the game.

But then Mexican Summer kept bothering us. They really wanted to release something by Soldiers. . .they kept hassling us over YEARS. We finally agreed to do something. Matt Sweeney produced it. . .thank god – because no one cared enough to finish anything. We just wanted to solo. Matt helped us finish something.

The album “Ball Strenth” was released to little fanfare and much indifference.

Then Sub Pop came calling to have us give them a song for their Sub Pop 2000 or something. . .we recorded a trackĀ and I tried to get the dudes to push through and finish an entire album with the money we were given to record one song. We recorded a lot of stuff and all of it sounds terrible now. But then Mexican Summer was intrigued again. They wanted another album. . .so we went into theirĀ studio and recorded for about 2-3 days.

And then it took 2 years to mix and overdub vocals on the thing. . .and at the end of the day – it’s great! I love it. . .I sing on a couple tracks and I think it’s a great supergroup album – so to speak. We’re all-stars in our own minds and barely there actually.

But this is a great album. . .you should buy it.
